POST emergency/back-up profiles
Newton POST profiles include information about programs that would offer emergency/back-up care (family child care, child care centers or school-based programs) located and/or based in the City of Newton, Massachusetts. Profiles were gathered from programs that meet the criteria below.
What is an Emergency/Back-up Program?
To be eligible for inclusion in the Newton POST, a program must:
- accept children between 5 and 17 years old. Note that some programs enroll children younter than 5 and older than 17 years of age.
- operate during the school year;
- operate during standard workday hours (7 am- 6 pm). note that some programs offer extended hours;
- operate regularly, most often Monday through Friday;
- be licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care or under the auspices of a school department or officially exempt.
Note that many other options are available to families during out-of-school-time hours, such as school vacation week programs and classes and recreational activities. Using the criteria above to define an emergency/back-up program, these programs are not included in the emergency/back-up section of the POST database.
What information is included in the Emergency/Back-up Full Profile?
Programs offered
The database indicates which of the following the program offers:
- Before and/or After School- programs available to children outside of school hours, whether in the mornings or afternoons.
- School Vacation- programs offered during public school vacation weeks (December, February and/or April) and, less frequently, independent school vacation weeks. Programs generally expand hours to cover the full day (before, during and after school).
- Summer Programs- expanded hours and coverage of some/all of the summer weeks. May enroll children not participating in the before and after school program in summer.
- Back-up or Emergency Care- programs that provide care on short notice.
