SAFETY: Teen Driving

Facts & Stats

  • Motor vehicle accidents are the #1 killer of teens.
  • 30% of 16-year-old drivers will be in a serious car accident.
  • 62% of people aged 16 to 20 who lost their lives in a car accident were not wearing a seat belt.
  • Teen drivers are twice as likely to kill a passenger riding with them as to kill themselves.

Basic Safety

  • Do not drive if you have taken a prescribed or over-the-counter medication that causes drowsiness.
  • Make sure that you and everyone you drive is buckled up. Do not put more people in a car than the number of seat belts.
  • Don't speed. If you’re caught speeding, you will receive a suspension of 90 days for a first offense.
  • It is dangerous to talk on a cell phone, text and/or adjust your iPod while driving.
  • It is illegal to wear headphones while driving.
  • Always make sure someone knows where you are.
  • Carry a cell phone and make sure it is charged.
  • Make sure you have a spare tire in your trunk.
  • Don't drive with a gas tank near empty.

Drinking and Driving

  • Don't drink alcohol and/or take illegal drugs and drive.
  • If you’re under 21, and your blood alcohol level is over .02%, your license will be taken away.
  • One drink could put you over the legal limit.
  • Talk to your parents/guardians about how to handle uncomfortable situations before they happen.
  • Have a taxi cab company's phone number with you in your wallet or in your cell phone.
  • Make a plan with your friends to watch out for each other.
