Girls and Cyberbullying

Shaken Baby Syndrome Training for Community Professionals

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is the combination of injuries to an infant's brain caused by vigorous shaking. This kind of violent shaking most often happens as a result of a caregiver's extreme and overwhelming frustration in response to a baby's incessant crying. The effects of SBS are devastating for victims and their families. Most importantly, SBS can be prevented. Children's Trust Fund will offer a series of free, half-day workshops designed for a wide range of community professionals who work with families with infants and young children. These workshops will provide participants with an understanding of SBS including its definition, causes and consequences. Participants also will learn methods to engage parents and other caregivers in strength-based discussions related to understanding and responding effectively to infant crying and to calming themselves in situations when they may be frustrated or overwhelmed with an infant's crying. Attendance at this workshop is free! A continental breakfast will be served. All workshops will be held 9 a.m. to noon. Eyes On Bullying: Practical Tips & Strategies For Parents Of Elementary School-Aged Children

Newton Reads Boys, Girls And Other Hazardous Materials

As part of a campaign, the Newton Free Library and The Newton Partnership are co-sponsoring a city-wide read of Rosalind Wiseman's latest book, BOYS, GIRLS AND OTHER HAZARDOUS MATERIALS. The novel is written from Wiseman's expert perspective with honest prose, capturing the humor, tone and drama of the high school experience. Community members are invited to read the book (which is available at the Newton Free Library, in school libraries, and in book stores) and attend this special event when Rosalind Wiseman will lead a discussion, which will be followed by a book signing. Learning Disabilities: What We Know, and How We Can Help

In this interactive workshop, we will discuss the emotional, social, and development challenges presented by the transition from home, family daycare, or preschool to kindergarten. We will look at the environment and expectations of kindergarten and strategize together about how to help children and parents deal positively with the process of transitioning to kindergarten. Parent Group Series: Navigating the Rocky Road of Adolescence
